What qualitative differences are
there between the previous
water-cooled gas lasers, DPSS
lasers and Diode lasers?
Gas lasers have compared to the present-day
diode lasers (diode laser, solid-state lasers)
better beam data and the divergence is
significantly better.
The number of manufacturers of gas lasers
was very limited. As a buyer it was easier to
decide, because the lasers were more easily
comparable in the specifications between the
well-known Coherent or Spectra Physics
lasers.
Nowadays, there is a flood of laser diodes.
For the buyer (here the end customer) it is
no longer so easy to figure out what quality is
indeed offered, since many specifications can
be misleading for the uninitiated. Thus he
runs the risk of letting himself get dazzled of
the seemingly cheap price and he receives
unfortunately rarely cheap. However diode
lasers have the plus that they are
enormously easier in the overall handling
(transport, construction, maintenance). They
are not water-cooled like once the gas lasers.
Thus the elaborate relocate of water houses
is eliminated.
In addition the housing of a diode laser is
much smaller, therefore much lighter, and it
can be installed almost anywhere. A diode
